How far would you go for a million dollars? Would you spend the night in a haunted house? When twisted billionaire Stephen Price and his devilish wife, Evelyn, offer six strangers one million dollars each, there is only one rule to the game: they’ll have to survive one night in a former mental institution, haunted by the ghosts of the inmates killed there, and an insane doctor who did unspeakable things…
At first, everyone is having fun, thinking that the whole thing is a joke. But once the entire house automatically seals itself shut, they realize that this is no joke.
I thought this movie was a decent remake. They did a pretty good job, on the special effects, and made it more creepier, than how the original was. The only issue I had about this movie was, for being a remake, they changed a lot of the storyline and only kept the main detail of spending the night, in the House on Haunted Hill. The amount of money was upgraded to one million dollars, instead of ten thousand. I guess they had to update that, since now days, $10,000 wouldn’t be worth the stay and a million would sound a lot more reasonable. They changed the character names, and a few other things.
I won’t go into too much detail, with the storyline, but I thought it was decent. I’m happy to see Hollywood didn’t ruin this movie, like I thought they would have done. The only thing I didn’t like, too much, was the ending. I thought they could have done a lot better with it and made it more scarier. For example, they could have had Doctor Vannacutt pop in out of nowhere, or the nurse could have done the final scene. For the scenes I did like, I won’t go into too much detail with them, but I liked the elevator scene, the roller-coaster scene, mostly. I also liked how they used Marilyn Manson’s version of “Sweet Dreams”, in this movie, as well.
As for the actors, I thought it was great to see Geoffrey Rush, which played as Stephen Price, look just like Vincent Price. If he had the same voice, it would have made this remake really great. I thought he did a great job, on his role, as well. As for the other characters, I thought everyone played their roles correctly. I really enjoyed the twist, towards the end.
If you haven’t seen this movie, it’s definitely worth watching. Though, I would still recommend the original version, with Vincent Price, to anyone who wants to see this movie but haven’t seen the original. The original version may have been cheesy, compared to this version, but there are still a few good scenes.
